Cycling Sikkim & Tea Trails of India
12 Days / 11 Nights
From US$3703

The dramatic terrain of Sikkim guarantees stunning vistas of snow-capped Himalayan peaks and challenging biking on roads lined with a wide variety of rhododendrons. This land locked northern Indian state is bordered by Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan, and the influence is seen in the people, the majority of whom are ethnically Nepali, and the two predominant religions of Hinduism and Vajrayana Buddhism. The going is mostly along quieter roads, but there are some busier sections, which the guides and accompanying vehicles will help you to negotiate. We start our tour at the state capital of Gangtok, which is also a centre of Tibetan Buddhist culture and learning. On our first day of riding we'll take an easy cycle to get used to the higher altitude of 1,437 metres (4,715 ft) and use our bicycles to visit the 200-year-old baroque Enchey monastery. We'll be riding down into valleys and then up over passes (none higher than 2,100 m) where we'll have the Kanchenjunga mountain range as our backdrop. We take breaks to visit Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, make a wish at Sikkim's holiest lake, sample tea from local plantations, and ride a toy train in the colonial hill station of Darjeeling.

Kolkata being capital of British Colonial Empire prior independence and now capital of west Bengal offer vast verity of sightseeing options which we will visit during our sightseeing tour. Our day starts with visit to Dalhousie Square, originally known in the eighteenth century as ‘Lal Dighi’ (Red Lake), and later as Tank Square. Later still, in the heydays of the British administration, it was called Dalhousie Square, after Lord Dalhousie who was the Governor General in the 1850s. Later on it was renamed as Benoy – Badal – Dinesh Bag (popularly known as BBD Bag) in the memory of three Indian nationalist martyrs – Benoy Krishna Bose, Badal Gupta and Dinesh Chandra Gupta. The area near around the Dalhousie Square provide one of the most interesting architectures of eighteenth and nineteenth century history. The Dalhousie Square area was once Dihi Kalikata – one of the three villages which later grew into the metropolis of Kolkata. It was here that the British first built a mud fort around 1700 and started their trading ware houses. Later, when the East India Company took over the administration of the region after 1757, their courts of justice and seat of governance and the churches for Sunday service were set up around Lal Dighi. Start from the Governor’s House (Raj Bhavan) goes past the Treasury Building to St. John’s Church, up to the Kolkata General Post Office (GPO), and around past the Collectorate Office and the Writer’s Building – the seat of the state government. Next pay visit to malik bazaar, one of Asia’s largest Flower Market. It can also be termed as Heritage Market. Beneath the east end of Howrah Bridge, Mullick Ghat Kolkata Flower Market is eastern India's largest flower market with hundreds of stalls and people sitting on the ground. Around 2,000 and more flower growers from the surrounding areas come to sell their flowers and garlands and during the wedding and festive season probably double that number. One can spend hours watching the hustle and the beautiful colours from the Howrah bridge. While on the Howrah Bridge, discover its wonder. It is popularly known as Rabindra Setu. Howrah Bridge in Kolkata spans over river Hooghly and is considered to be a marvellous engineering work by the British. The Howrah Bridge is enumerated amongst the busiest cantilever bridge in the World. It took nearly about 7 long years to construct the Howrah Bridge. The cantilever bridge of Howrah was completed in 1943. The Howrah Bridge in Kolkata was opened to traffic and public in the same year. The total expenditure of making the bridge was nearly £2,500,000. Your next destination is Kumartuli, this unique artisan village dates back 400 years, making it perhaps the oldest of its kind in the world. It is the lifeblood of Bengal’s biggest festival and keeps the Puja fervor alive among Bengali communities in other countries. Around 250 artists work to produce 40,000 idols a year, including 3500 images of Durga. With more than a thousand workers assisting the artisans, Kumartuli is a mini industry. It exports 50 Durga idols to virtually all corners of the world, including UK, USA, Canada, Germany and Switzerland.
