Day 2: Delhi - Jaisalmer : Street shoot - Famous sights - Surprises

After breakfast and tour briefing we grab our camera-bags and head off for our first trip of sightseeing and photo shoot of India's Capital Delhi. This city typifies the soul of the entire country. Concealed within its bosom remains of a civilization that flourished over the last five thousand years, several rulers ruled over Delhi and left behind numerous architectural wonders worthy to prize captures in your camera. Captivate yourself and capture with your camera the splendid of New and Old Delhi and witness the legacy of the past which survived the many monuments left behind by the regents. The ruins, speak of the golden tale of the evolution of architectural styles of the times and the synthesis of various cultures and influences. From history to heritage to culture, Delhi's attractions are plentiful. This city with its endless charm will give you plentiful moments to keep your camera clicking all the time.
We will visit Qutab Minar the 379-step tall tower dating to 1193, 72.5 meters high, made of red sandstone and marble is the tallest Miner in India, a popular UNISCO world heritage monument found on many photo repositories and albums of the world. Visit camera friendly 17th century Jama Masjid India's principal and biggest mosque, capable of holding 20000 devotees at time and then the unmissable buzzing chaos of Chandni Chowk for street shooting. Your next adventure begins as we board overnight train in the evening for a rocking'-and-rolling' journey to Jaisalmer in air-conditions sleeper class. This by itself is a bit of a shooting opportunity: slices of railway life on board and on the platforms at train stops will have you reaching for your camera now and then. Packed dinner will be served. Overnight on board. (B,L,D)

Day 3: Jaisalmer - Thar Desert, Havelies, Markets and Moments

When you wakeup, the terrain has changed and we are now in the middle of the arid Thar Desert. Just before noon, we roll into Jaisalmer, the Golden City to reflect its lovely sandstone hues and transfer to hotel. After wash and change we'll head straight out to the city and start shooting. We begin with the town, the bustling market. You'll come upon the opportunistic vignettes, the once-in-a-lifetime moments: the child playing in a doorway, the vivid flashes of a woman's sari (eye-stinging oranges, pinks, purples, yellows and blues) giving you foreground interest as you compose a honey-and-cerulean-blue roofline in the sky. These candids and atmospherics will grow livelier and sparkle with amazing beauty because today is Dipawali eve the festival of lights, shops will be even more colourful than usual with twinkling lights, and people will be busy with last-minute shopping, cleaning up their homes and dressing them for the event.
Photographic Nirvana. Late in the afternoon we'll head out to the sand dunes. We're hunting for the camels, not to ride them but to take amazing photographs of them on the dunes. The sun will be low, kissing everything with a delicious glow and making it easy to shoot those backlit beauties. On our way back we'll stop outside the fort to take in the illuminated city. We'll grab a few blue-hour shots before tramping through the magical, winding cobbled streets of the old town, stealing memorable images of illuminations and the celebratory mood of the people. Jaisalmer is for photographers, and you will hate us for allowing you only two night stay. (B,L,D)

Day 4: Jaisalmer : Sunrise dune shoot, Khuri Village, Dunes capes, Shepherds

We wakeup early morning for sunrise shoot from the top of a sand dune as the first pink rays kisses the ancient fortress fully justifying the reason why you bought your camera. We than go to Khuri village and chat with the colourful residents of this charming Rajasthani hamlet and, with a bit of luck, be invited into one of the mud-and-thatch huts for some portraits and a chance to get to know them one-to-one. We'll capture images of shepherds tending their flocks in the late afternoon, and then dash back to our hotel to put our feet up a bit and prepare for the evening's events.
Keep your camera fully charged as today is Dipawali, the Indian Festival of Light. Even in the most ordinary working town this festival is a feast for the eye: here, in Jaisalmer's exquisite citadel, it's something you'll want to tell your grandchildren and friends about it again and again. Enjoy fireworks as the citadel's ancient walls resound and reflect the light of a myriad of decorative lamps. To feel part of the local revelry your tour director will organise a genuinely privileged encounter, up close and friendly with a local family as they celebrate Diwali in their own home, enabling you to chat, connect and take photos in classic Travel Shooters documentary style.(B,L,D)

Day 5: Jaisalmer - Jodhpur : Roadside encounters, Mehrangarh Fort, Jaswant Thada, Blue City Street shooting

After breakfast we hit the road to Jodhpur. As we drive, we're seeing fascinating glimpses of Thar Desert life flash past you. Dozens of droopy-eyed camels loping lazily across our way; exquisitely costumed Rajasthani women wearing, seemingly, a couple of kilograms apiece of handcrafted silverware and rattling glass and gold and silver bangles; the impossibly good-looking Marwari men trading jokes and goods over steaming glasses of tea.
Even with Diwali in Jaisalmer still fresh in your mind, Jodhpur will take your breath away. We'll shoot scintillating coloured beams of sunlight streaming through exquisite multi-hued glass panes in cool marble halls; we'll amble past walls of ancient mirrors and marvel at the extravagant and sensuous Phool Mahal; where concubines once swayed and danced to tempt a prince's libido. The Zenana Deodi next, where the Maharajah kept his collection of wives under the strict seclusion of purdah, guarding his gene pool by surrounding the mothers of his children with eunuchs.
We'll give our cameras a chance to cool, briefly, while we proceed down to the Jaswant Thada, an exquisite, creamy white marble memorial made all the more magnificent by its contrast against the azure desert sky. Then we're off to capture amazing slices of Jodhpuri life, and the contrasts of local costumes in its vibrant colour set against those blue-daubed walls giving you the kind of shooting most photographers can only dream of. Stay two nights in hotel. (B,L,D)

Day 6: Rural Rajasthani Village : The Bishnoi Tribals, Mud village, Wildlife, Personal encounters

Today we head out to a rural Rajasthani village to experience and shoot the amazing world of the Bishnoi tribe. Amazing because they live rigidly and prosperously by 29 tenets lay down by their founder in the early 15th century.
Prepare yourself for an adventure ride through encounters, shot opportunities and contrasts that will flatly astonish you. Bishnois are strict vegetarians and animals are considered as God and when we are invited into the cool shade of their huts we may well see a woman suckling an injured or weak black-buck calf. The women wear richly coloured clothes, following one of the tenets, while the men wear a spotless bright white. You'll secretly want to dash right back to the hotel to check out what you've captured on your memory card. But you have to wait, because after lunch we'll all amble back down to the Old Town, shooting those seductive blue street scenes. Our Tour Director may have a surprise experience up his sleeve: perhaps a picturesque shooting session of tying a Rajasthani turban, or if his friends are in, we might pop in and say hello to a local family in their home, learning about their lives and with their full permission to take photographs. (B,L,D)

Day 7: Jodhpur - Narlai :Marwari warrior horse shoot, heritage hotels, Free evening

In the morning we'll set off for a very special encounter going behind the scenes for a specially organised shoot experience with a very exclusive, rare and photogenic breed of Marwari horses with its great story of existence and current bloodline.
We'll shoot a large group of these descendants of the Rajput warrior horses, pristine and unsaddled, by a quiet stream. Handlers will ensure that the horses do our bidding, giving us all the best opportunities and light angles. We'll then follow the horses through all the key moments of a day's care and training: depending on the light, we shoot them being bathed, massaged and groomed, and then strutting proudly in full ceremonial regalia.
Evening is free to socialise, relax and explore, to gossip over the celebrity clientele of the Marwari animals, and more likely than not sitting with your laptop proudly exclaiming over the day's catch. (B,L,D)

Day 8: Narlai : Close encounter with the Rabari nomads, Opium in the den, Free evening

The Rabaris are descendants of an ancient group of nomads who wandered the Thar, grazing and raising cattle, camels and goats amidst whatever thin nourishment the sparse desert flora would afford. Today, many of them are semi-nomadic, living in small villages dotted over thousands of square kilometres of Rajasthan and its neighbouring states. And we've been invited today to join them and share few hours of their lives with them, up close and personal.
We'll reach there to capture early morning activity, as they primp their circular mud-and-thatch homes, the women starting the day's cooking, fetching water from the village well, dressing themselves and their children while the men head out to graze their livestock. This is powerful, authentic, slice-of-life stuff, and you'll be shooting, chatting, getting to know our new friends in the morning light and right through to midday. You'll be fascinated by their amazing jewellery, their tattoos and accessories. We enjoy Opium ceremony before heading back to the hotel and have relaxed evening, because tomorrow, bright and early, we set off to one of the great shows on earth; the Pushkar Camel Fair. (B,L,D)

Day 09: Narlai - Pushkar : The Camel Fair, Hot Air Balloon Ride

We'll leave Narlai after breakfast and head out to our tour highlight, the Pushkar Camel Fair, arriving there before noon. Like all the serious players, we're there early, when the livestock trading is at its most intense, the crowds fascinating but manageable, and the access for photography most unwrap and accessible.
Mind-boggling photo opportunities await as after check in and quick wash and change we head down the dunes to Pushkar lake: the turbaned men, the bejewelled and extravagantly draped women, the traditionally costumed kids, the camels, the goats and the cattle, all heading in to where the action is.
As the sun drops down the horizon and sends out long, photogenic shadows, we trigger off the highlight of our Rajasthan photo tour, the "hot air balloon ride over Pushkar at sunset". After an hour's silent, drifting, shooting adventure in the sky above Pushkar, we'll land and head off to dinner. (B,L,D)

Day 10: Pushkar : Sunrise with the camels, Pushkar Camel Fair, Pushkar town shoot, Hilltop temples

We're up at dawn for a sunrise shoot, hoping to scoop up that soft, soft light as it edge-lights the dunes, backlights wandering camels and gives even the ordinary a little touch of magic. We'll shoot the snake-charmers, the puppet shows, the haggling of the camel-dealers, and the mix of silent introspections and infectious joy that you find at all huge gatherings. Evening, we head out away from the lake to Pushkar town itself to see more amazing slices of life, street stalls and traders, barbers and buccaneers, holy men and grafters before returning back to our accommodation for dinner. Evening is free for those who like to venture out for some more evening shoots. (B,L,D)

Day 11: Pushkar : Full-on festivities - Camelback and camel buggies - Pushkar sunset

By now, you'll have the classic shooter's feel for the kind of shot you really want to master at Pushkar. The backlit camels and hanging dust at sundown… the amazing colours, clothes, canopies and tattoos… the proud, handsome faces of the Marwari men and the flashing, dancing eyes of the women with their nose-rings and jewelled scarves… the night shots of spinning Ferris wheels and the lake's edges picked out from the darkness with a million tiny tea-lights. One last glorious, smoky, exotic Pushkar sunset and a bit of jewellery shopping for the folks back home. (B,L,D)

Day 12: Pushkar - Jaipur : Ajmer, Hawa Mahal, Amber Fort, Bazaars

Today early morning we slip off to the Pink City of Jaipur; so nicknamed because the entire city was painted bright pink in honour of the Prince of Wales' visit in 1853 and stop en-route to capture shoot worthy tableaux in the towns of Ajmer.
Jaipur's royal origins will be a big influence on our shooting over the next couple of days: its forts, palaces and monuments make for spectacular photography under the clear desert sky.
Sightseeing and a bit of architectural photography: at Hawa Mahal, the Palace of the Winds, its unique layer-cake honeycomb windows designed expressly to enable the women of the royal court to see passing life without being seen; and the magnificent Amber Fort, built 1592 and filled with jewelled and mirrored architectural delight. Our private guide will talk us through these remarkable royal buildings and put what you're shooting into context.
If there's time before dinner, we'll experience some of Jaipur's fabled bazaars, where you can shop, shoot or simply gawp at the amazing array of footwear, rich textiles, saris, leather wares, perfumes, gemstones, jewellery, rugs, carpets, furniture and carvings. Evening free to unwind and do what we each choose. Stay two nights at hotel. (B,L,D)

Day 13: Jaipur : Elephants, Sari dyeing workshop, local Bazaar

We'll start by visiting the elephants we saw yesterday up to the Amber Fort: we'll find them in a brand new government-funded elephant village and with a bit of luck, we'll see them playing in their special pool for great shooting material and a chance to get really close over a decent period of shooting time.
Later we move to sari dyeing workshop for some of the most extravagant displays of colour you'll ever get to point your autofocus and need you reaching for a polarising filter or under-exposing to tame the desert sun's highlights. In the evening we explore local bazaar and street shoot. (B,L,D)

Day 14: Jaipur - Agra : Itmad-ud-Dualah - Taj Mahal sunset shoot - Taj Ganj

Soon after breakfast we head for Agra, a city which, to tell the truth, isn't in Rajasthan at all. Four hours or so of fascinating rural driving while witnessing dodging tooting lorries, lugubrious camels, sacred cows, wandering pedestrians and other-worldly holy men all apparently claiming sole ownership of the highway.
As we enter Agra, we first visit Itimad-ud-Daulah's so called Baby Taj; the exquisite jewel-box before arriving at the hotel for check in and quick wash and change we'll make our way to the Taj Mahal and shoot it inside, outside and at perfect sunset taking advantage of when the shadows are long and the sun tints the bone marble with orange. If time permits than explore Taj Ganj. (B,L,D)

Day 15: Agra - Delhi Departure : Taj Mahal sunrise shoot - Agra Fort

Early wakeup and head out for one last Taj Mahal shoot at sunrise. Return back to hotel for breakfast and checkout. Before we return back to Delhi we visit Agra Fort, a colossal red sandstone walled city where Shah Jahan, the emperor who built the Taj Mahal, spent the last seven years of his life under house arrest.
On arrival in Delhi direct transfer to the airport where you board your return flight back home.

Important: This is a typical itinerary focussed on photography and to capture the best light time available our Tour Director may change. In particular, although we book the hot air balloon as far in advance as practical, unpredictable factors including flying conditions and local demand may prevent us from flying as planned. If we don't fly, you'll get a refund of the hot air balloon element of the tour price. (B)
