This Cycling Tour cover all the must see spots of Sri Lanka in a short period of time. The tour starts with arrival in Colombo and we stay in our first night, relaxing and preparing for an adventurous journey ahead. We explore Negombo, a fisherman town before heading to witness the stunning cave temples at Dambulla and Sigiriya, the mountain top fortress of King Kassapa, life of locals, shops, nature at its best and paddy fields to name few. Our next stop is ancient town of Polonnaruwa and Kandy for its colonial charm, vibrant markets, lovely gardens and the sacred temple of tooth relic. Than travel to Nuwara Eliya and cycle through Ceylon tea plantation then to Horton Plains for its natural beauty. Yala national Park, famous for leopard and other wild animals, will be our next destination. Relax beside the golden beaches and explore the UNESCO World Heritage site of Galle fortress and the town.

Note: Due to hygiene reasons we recommend you to bring your own personal cycling gear to be used during tour. We only provide one mountain terrain bike to ride as per itinerary

Cycling Through Sri Lanka- 10 Days/09 Nights (Small Group Tour)

Day 01: Arrive Colombo

Meet and assistance by TOTAL HOLIDAY OPTIONS Tour Executive and transfer to the hotel for two nights stay Negombo. 


Day 02: Day 02: Negombo 

Enjoy your leisurely breakfast and tour briefing by your Tour Director you will be given Trek hybrid bikes or similar. Fine tune the cycle before start the tour next day.

Total Cycling distance approximately 15 km. [Approx. 2 Hours]


Day 03: Day 03: Negombo - Sigiriya

After breakfast travel towards Sigiriya.

Cycling from Dankotuwa to Kuliyapitiya -

Total Cycling distance approximately 25 - 40 km. [Approx. 3 - 4 Hours]

On arrival check in to the hotel and in the evening sightseeing by cycling.

Sigiriya. Stay two nights in Sigiriya.(B,D)


Day 04: Polonnaruwa Excursion 

After breakfast we head towards Polonnaruwa the ancient capital of Sri Lanka.

This is flat and moderate route and you are riding through mini forest area, paddy fields.

Entire cycling trail approximately 69 km but you can ride as you wish. 

Total Cycling distance approximately 25 - 40 km. [Approx. 3 - 4 Hours]

On arrival check in to the hotel and enjoy cycling tour of Polonnaruwa.

POLONNARUWA – is another “UNESCO World Heritage Site” was the Capital of Sri Lanka from 11th - 13th Centuries, contains some splendid and spectacular statues. (B,D)


Day 05: Day 04: Sigiriya – Kandy

After breakfast or with packed breakfast, leave for Kandy via Matale by cycle.

This is flat and altitude cycling trail. Gradually sea altitude increasing and you do not feel much tired because temperature reducing.

Total Cycling distance approximately 40 - 50 km. [Approx. 4 - 5 Hours]

Check in to the hotel on arrival. In the evening a city tour of Kandy by cycle. Stay overnight in Kandy. (B,D)


Day 06: Kandy – Nuwara Eliya

Early morning cycling to Nuwara Eliya and Breakfast will take on the way. En-route visited to Tea factory and taste pure Ceylon tea.

If you want cycling high altitude area, you can start from Gampola to Nuwara Eliya. You can refresh with cup of tea while you are cycling.

NUWARA ELIYA - The ‘Little England’ of Sri Lanka, is set against beautiful backdrops of Mountains, Valleys, Waterfalls and Tea Plantations. Stay overnight in Nuwara Eliya. (B,D)


Day 07: Nuwara Eliya

Early morning cycling to Horton Plains with packed breakfast (cycling starting time around 6.30 a.m). Trekking in Horton Plains.

This is highest altitude cycling trail in Sri Lanka and altitude 1900 – 2000 meters.  You will ride through mini forest. 

Total Cycling distance approximately 40 km.

HORTON PLAINS NATIONAL PARK– 20 miles (32 km) from Nuwara Eliya via Ambewela and Pattipola.

Day 08: Nuwara Eliya - Yala

After breakfast or with packed breakfast, cycling to Yala (cycling starting time around 6.00 a.m)

Total Cycling distance approximately 70 km. [Approx. 5 Hours]

Evening Safari in Yala National Park by 4 WD Jeep. Overnight stay in Yala. (B,D)


Day 09: Yala – Galle

After breakfast leave  for Gall  and cycling to Hambantota (cycling starting time around 7.00 a.m). From Hambantota to Galle transfer by Vehicle. From Yala to Hambantota cycling flat route and it is very comfortable trail.

Total Cycling distance approximately 30 km. [Approx. 3 Hours]

Evening cycling in Galle city. Overnight stay in Galle. (B,D)


Day 10:  Galle – Colombo. 

After breakfast transfer to Colombo for the overnight stay. (B,D)


Day 11:  Colombo – Airport

After a leisurely breakfast check out of the hotel and travel to Colombo international airport to board your onward flight home.

International Flights

The tour packages are usually “Land Only” and do not include international flights.  We therefore recommend that you contact us or your travel agent to book your flights well in advance of travel, when you can generally gain access to specials and discounted airfares. Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is compulsory on all of our journeys. Speak to us or your travel agent about comprehensive insurance to cover your travel arrangements. This must critically cover medical expenses in case of an emergency.  Note that travel insurance automatically provided with credit cards generally does not provide adequate cover. Its your responsibility to ensure that you have appropriate and comprehensive travel insurance.

Medical Information

Our elderly travellers who are aged 70 years or more, or with a per-existing condition that affects their fitness to travel or any medical dietary requirement, must be advised at the time of booking. We recommend all travellers should visit their Doctor for these aforementioned purposes and/or to confirm that they are physically able to undertake the day-to-day requirements of the tour.

Selecting Your Holiday Type

Most of our journeys are suited to those with normal fitness and mobility levels. To assist you in choosing a journey best for you we have graded our tours;

Easy Paced: These programs are set at a comfortable pace. Walking and climbing of stairs involved is generally in and around major tourist attractions though you may require walking from road till boat jetty while embarking or disembarking boats.

Moderate: These tours are not strenuous but you will require good amount of fitness as they may include days with long periods of walking or soft trekking, climbing of stairs, embarking and disembarking boats and where longer distances may be travelled by uneven roads.

Adventurous: These refer to programs where your physical fitness needs to be on highest level. Trekking, cycling, climbing, walking and more adventurous activities may be included.

Getting Around

Comfort is our first priority. All our coaches are air-conditioned with push back seats. We even offer 30-35 seater coach when only 16 people are in a group, providing everyone a window seats. Our train journeys in air-conditioning sleeper class where bedding is provided by the train attendant and itineraries that include domestic flight to connect destination we use economy class.

Passport & Visas

India: Visa is required for all foreign nationals and you must obtain an Indian visa prior to leaving home as visa processing varies country to country. Passport must be valid for at least six months before you commence travel in India. Travel to Sikkim requires a special permit; application may be made when applying for a standard Indian visa at the local Indian High Commission.

As of 25 Sep 2013 nationals and passport holder of New Zealand, Singapore, Japan, Finland, Luxem Bourg, Philippines, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Indonesia and Myanmar can avail visa-on-arrival (VoA) facility upon disembarking at international airports Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kochi and Trivandrum only. You will require to pay fee along with require documentation and is subject to verification and satisfaction of the Immigration. Please contact high commission of India for updated information.

Sri Lanka: Every tourist visiting Sri Lanka required visa prior to departure. Visa must be obtained atleast 01 months prior to arrival in Sri Lanka by visiting www.eta.gov.lk The Tourist visa is valid for stay within 30 days. Passport must be valid for at least six months before you commence travel to Sri Lanka. Fee will apply.

Nepal: Visa is required for all foreign nationalities and the best way to apply for visa is from the Royal Nepalese diplomatic missions in your home country. Tourist Visa also can be obtained on arrival. Passport must be valid for at least six months before you commence travel in Nepal. Fee will apply.

Bhutan: All foreign nationals require visa for Bhutan.

Visa can be arranged by TOTAL HOLIDAY OPTIONS. To process this we require clear readable colour copy of passport (page containing passport no and face picture in JPEG or PDF format) and current colour passport photograph and at least 30 days prior to date of entry into Bhutan. Remaining validity of passport should be at least 6 months from the date of exit from Bhutan.

Tourism Council of Bhutan issues visa clearance letter closer to travelling date which we email or fax you or your local travel agent. Travellers are required to produce aforesaid visa clearance copy at the time of check-in for their flights while those entering Bhutan by surface via Phuentsholing or Samdrup Jonkhar, they are required to produce this Visa Clearance letter at the Immigration counter. Actual visa is stamped at passport on arrival in Bhutan.

Visa only service is not offered in Bhutan, you would have to book a service tour package from TOTAL HOLIDAY OPTIONS that includes accommodation, guided tours, transfers etc

Day 1: Arrive Colombo

On arrival at the airport, meet your Tour Director who will assist you to transfer to the hotel in Negombo for two nights stay.


Day 2: Negombo

Enjoy your leisurely breakfast and tour briefing by your Tour Director you will be given Trek hybrid bikes or similar. To get familiar we explore this fisherman town, local markets and streets in the afternoon and fine tunings the cycle before we start the tour next day. (B,D).


Day 3: Negombo - Sigiriya

After an early breakfast we travel till Dankotuwa by our charter coach and cycle to Kuliyapitiya covering approx 30-40km by cycle which can be increased if everyone willing to push more. It’s a flat and moderate route and cycling through paddy fields, coconut estates makes cycling enjoyable. After quick wash and change we enjoy city tour on bike and climb Sigiriya Rock a “UNESCO World Heritage Site” and the 5th Century “Fortress in the Sky” which is perhaps the most fantastic single wonder of the Island. This world heritage site, consists of the remains of a palace on the top of the rock, a mid level terrace that includes the Lion Gate and the mirror wall with its frescoes of the 'Heavenly Maidens', the lower palace on the slopes below the rock, and the moats, walls and water gardens that extend for some hundreds of meters out from the base. Day 4: Sigiriya - Polonnaruwa

After breakfast we head towards ancient capital of Sri Lanka between 11th – 13th Century. We travel by coach till midway and cycle approx 30-40km or more before arriving to Polonnaruwa. After wash and change we explore this ancient capital and UNESCO World Heritage Site by cycle. Built in the 11th and 12th centuries AD, Polonnaruwa is another World Heritage Site. It comprises the Brahmanic monuments built by the South Indian Cholas, and the ruins of the fabulous garden-city created by Parakramabahu I during the golden age of Polonnaruwa in the 12th century. Irrigation systems far superior to those of the Anuradhapura age were constructed, systems which to this day supply the water necessary for paddy cultivation during the dry season. Here you can see the ruins of the Royal Palace, the Gal Viharaya (4 huge statues of Buddha carved out of rock), the Audience Hall, the Lotus Bath, King Parakramabahu's statue, and the remains of a former Temple of the Tooth Relic Overnight stay at hotel. Day 5: Polonnaruwa - Kandy

Today travel to Matale and cycle approx 40km to Kandy; another UNESCO world heritage site and also former British summer capital. After bit of relax we explore the town by cycle, the name "Kandy" conjures visions of splendor and magnificence. Many of the legends, traditions, and folklore are still lovingly kept alive. cycle around Kandy Lake, built by the last Sinhala king, Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe, in 1798. Visit Kandy town and bazaar, the arts and crafts center, a gem museum, and a lapidary. Witness cultural dance show and sacred Temple of Tooth Relic before concluding your day with dinner and over night at hotel.(B,D)


Day 6: Kandy - Nuwara Eliya

We leave for Nuwara Eliya also known as little England; en-route visit Tea factory and taste pure Ceylon tea. Terrain has changes again and now we will enjoy cycling approx 30-40km on high altitude area, we start cycling from Gampola to Nuwara Elliya through Tea plantation and gradually sea altitude increasing from 772 meters to 1878 meters. You are now in the tea country; where ever you look, you will see tea plantations, the rich full green of thousands and thousands of tea bushes. And out of the green in regular intervals the white coloured tea factories will enchant your eyes. Occasionally you can see a few rice fields and near the villages, vegetable plantations or gardens. The small resort town of Nuwara Eliya, situated at 2'070 m above sea level, lies on a little lake and is surrounded by mountains covered over and over by tea bushes. At the town boundaries there are a lot of vegetable plantations and flower fields, but also along the roads of Nuwara Eliya and in most of its gardens flowers are blooming. Evening free to relax or explore the town. Stay two nights at hotel.(B,D)


Day 7: Nuwara Eliya B

Early morning cycling to Horton Plains with packed breakfast. This is highest altitude cycling trail in Sri Lanka and altitude 1900 – 2000 meters. We will ride through this nature reserve and mini forest crossing Ambewela and Pattipola covering approx 40km. This National park harbours 52 species of resident birds, 11 species of migrant birds amongst other wildlife.(B,D)


Day 8: Nuwara Eliya - Yala

We start early cycling towards Yala covering approx 60km. This is downhill trek and it’s brings trills, fun and adventurous. You can ride down like wind and experience altitude gradually decreasing. As you reach to border of you may see peacocks, elephant and deer by the roadside. Evening we enjoy Jeep safari in Yala National Park and let see who can spot maximum wildlife animals. Yala – Sri Lanka’s 2nd largest and most known National Park is popular for Elephant, Leopard, Bear, Crocodile and Wild Boar. 97,800 hectares in extent. Claims have subsequently been made that Yala National Park has the world’s highest concentration of leopard per square kilometre. Vegetation is primarily grassland and shrub jungle with patches of dense growth while several salt and fresh water lagoons are a haven for a large variety of resident and migrant birds. Areas popular with leopard are rock strewn hillocks with dense shrub in which the animals hide. Stay two nights at hotel.(B,D)


Day 9: Yala - Galle

Today we cycle till Hambantota approx 30km trail is very flat and comfortable. From here we board our coach to Galle; one of the most historically interesting town use to be major port until about 100 years back. Said to be the famous Tarshish of the Bible where King Solomon obtained gems and spices, this “Living” UNESCO World Heritage Site is the port where the Portuguese first landed in Sri Lanka in 1505. Captured and fortified by the Dutch who ruled maritime Sri Lanka in the 17th and 18th centuries, the city still retains the air of old Holland. Within the well preserved 90 acre fort and ramparts built in 1663 are old Dutch churches and monuments with armorial bearings, an imposing crested and monogrammed gateway dated 1669, many well preserved old Dutch houses and narrow alleys still bearing Dutch names. Evening cycle through the Fort and explore town where you can see the traditional lace makers, wood carvers and hunt for finest souvenirs. Stay overnight in hotel.(B,D)


Day 10: Galle -Colombo Departure

Enjoy your leisurely breakfast and relax till you checkout by 1200hrs. Later return back to Colombo and tour finish with direct transfer to the international Airport. (B)
